A working ranch with a mission

Where horses are cared for,and people are healed.

Four Locos Ranch is home to full-care horse boarding and a riding program built on patience. It’s also home to Horses for Heroes — where veterans, active duty service members, and first responders find steady ground again in the company of a horse.

Two ways in: apply to the program, or come board with us.

Two ways to be here

Whether you need a place for your horse or a place for yourself

The ranch runs on both. The same hands that muck stalls and turn out horses each morning are the hands that lead a session in the arena that afternoon.

Horses for Heroes

A no-cost program for veterans, active duty service members, and first responders living with PTSD, traumatic brain injury, or the plain weight of what they carry. Time on the ground with a horse — groundwork, grooming, and riding when you’re ready.

  • No cost to the participant. Ever.
  • No horse experience needed — most people start with a brush, not a saddle.
  • Sessions are built around you, at your pace.

Boarding & riding

Boarding & Riding

Full-care board with daily turn-out, a covered arena, and access to real trail miles. We take a limited number of horses so every one of them gets handled — not just fed.

  • Stalls, pasture board, and daily turn-out.
  • Arena work plus trails straight off the property.
  • Boarding from $650/month.

The non-profit side

Horses don’t ask what happened to you

That’s the whole reason this works. A horse reads you honestly — your breathing, your tension, whether you’re actually present. There’s no rank here, no paperwork, and nothing to explain. You just have to show up and be where you are.

Horses for Heroes pairs veterans, active duty service members, and first responders with the right horse and gives them structured, unhurried time together. Some people groom and lead for months before they ever get on. That’s not falling behind — that’s the work.

Read about the program

What Horses for Heroes is not

This program is not therapy, and it is not a crisis service. We are not licensed mental health clinicians, and we don’t provide counseling, diagnosis, or treatment. What we offer is time with horses, mentorship, and a community that doesn’t need the details. If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room — then come see us when you’re safe.

Boarding & facilities

Limited stalls. Real attention.

We keep our board numbers deliberately small. That means your horse gets handled every day by someone who knows their name, their quirks, and whether they’re off. No feedlot, no rotating crew.

Daily turn-out

Stalled horses get out every single day, weather permitting. Movement first.

Stalls & pasture board

Matbedded stalls with quality hay, or pasture board for the easy keepers.

Covered arena

A lit, covered arena means winter riding and rainy-day training still happen.

Trails off the property

Real miles of trail, not a loop around a paddock. Bring a buddy and go.

Feeding & blanketing

Hay, grain, and supplements per your program. Blankets on and off as needed.

On-site owners

We live here. Someone is always walking the barn. That's the whole point.

Riding & training

The kind of riding you actually wanted

Whatever your discipline, the foundation is the same: a horse that stands still, moves off your leg, and trusts you on a loose rein.

Trail & Western Riding

Long miles, real terrain, and horses that are comfortable out there. Groundwork through to confident trail riding.

A therapeutic horseback riding session in a stable setting

Adaptive & Therapeutic Riding

Mounted and unmounted sessions adapted to the rider, with side-walkers and patient, well-conditioned horses.

Ranch grounds and facility buildings

Lessons & Horsemanship

Private and small-group lessons. We teach the whole horse — catching, grooming, tack, and the why behind it.
